Art springs in September

Welcome to Open Studios, starting the first weekend in September 2026. It’s all over Hertfordshire, but something extra special this year in Harpenden… TWO KERRS in one visit to Studio 6 in the pop-up gallery on Leyton Road opposite Waitrose. Yep, me with my sculptural papiermache, and daughter Kat Kerr! Her 2-D art is in varied media from acrylic to thread and digital art (think Hockney), including landscapes and pet portraits. And now she, too, has entered 3-D world, with sculptured books. Meanwhile I’m trying to grow myself in painting. Cross-overs we are: the main thing is to grow and play.

Fast Birds Tropical: ‘I know why the caged bird sings’

A bold Thames Cormorant, a Gilded Lion, a dappled pony, an adoring little dog — and my seventh series of Fast Birds… come and see at Open Studios this week! The gallery’s called Take Six, in Harpenden opposite Waitrose on Leyton Road. I’m with five other super creatives: paintings, jewellery, fused-glass and furniture. Come see (and maybe buy?).

All my pieces of sculptural papiermache are signed and dated, and labelled with a title and quote from poetry, hymns, nursery rhymes or… other. That’s because I am a writer as well as a 3D maker. They come to life! Of course you recognise Maya Angelou in the caption above.

When 3-d joins 2-d

The Griffin and I are pleased as punch to have been invited to join six other artists/makers in a pop-up gallery. It’s the first week — 11-17 September 2023 — of Hertfordshire Open Studios. It would be fab to see you in Harpenden, Leyton Road opposite Waitrose.

Seeding Sculptural Papiermache… will it take root and grow in Hertfordshire? I’ve already got two companion makers in a monthly workshop — watch this space. And see some of my pieces that will be on show here.

Writing alternative creativity

Cat O’ 9 Teats

When in writing doubt, do something else creative! Try sticky-fingered papiermache. My group of makers, The PapierMachistas, are inspired by the Mexican Linares family. Our work on show this Sunday 2 July, noon, at the Cambrian Community Centre, Richmond, London — YOU are invited. It’s part of ArtHouse artists’ open studios.  This is my Cat o’Nine Teats. This kind of creativity lets me speak without words.
